My favourite part of Rome without a question is the centrally located Piazza Navona. This Piazza at Christmas time has a lovely market and it is also a great time all year round for relaxing in.

There is a marvellous toy shop on one end of the Piazza and this shop will interest both children and adults, given the unique toys on sale. Make sure also to take a look in the art gallery just across from the toy shop.

Travelling from Rome Airport to the City Centre

The main airport in Rome is around 30km outside of the city centre, but travel to and from the airport is made easy by the public transport networks in the area.

Possibly the easiest and most direct way of travelling from the airport to the city centre is the rail link which runs directly from the airport into the Rome’s central train station, a journey which is not affected by traffic and generally takes about fifteen to twenty minutes. There is also the option to get a train which stops at various stations on the way to the central station, and this is a popular option with many as it is a few Euros cheaper.

If you are travelling on a budget and do not mind the journey taking slightly longer, you can opt to take the airport bus. This costs around half the amount of the train equivalent and run as much as every half an hour. The bus runs to and from the central train station, making ongoing connections extremely easy.

As would be expected from a major international airport, there is a good network of taxis which trawl the airport to city centre route. These taxis are ideal for those who are in a rush but do not come recommended in general due to the fact that the prices can be quite high.

If you have visited Rome and come back home without visiting one of its famous “gelaterie” or ice cream parlours, you are guilty of missing out on one of the most decadent cold desserts of Italian origin. The Romans give as much importance to their ice cream as they do to pasta and coffee and visitors simply must taste this delicious ice cream of Rome because it is not only top quality, but also original.

When I was in Rome, I learned the basic difference between “ice cream” and “gelato.” The Italian “gelato” is smoother and richer than the ice cream you will find in ice cream parlours elsewhere. This is because the Italians churn the mixture and avoid loading it with cream and sugar. They also sell it in cups and cones. Also, since you pay for your “gelato” per cup, you can request 2 – 3 flavours in your cup.

Never leave Rome without visiting San Crispino, a narrow and long shop, which looks just like Italian ice cream parlours did before glass display cases were invented. San Crispino offers several flavours of gelato made of nuts, fresh fruits and even liqueurs; you will find San Crispino branches all over Rome.

During my last visit to Rome, I had visited the Colosseum and was longing for some ice cream when I spotted the Tre Scalini. This delightful place is located in the Piazza Navona and you must not fail to taste the chocolate ice cream ball rolled in chunks of chocolate with a cherry at its centre. You can eat this delightful gelato delicacy as you people watch at the square. If you are interested in traditional Italian flavours, you can visit the 19th-century Giolitti, which is located a short distance from the Pantheon. Try the rare combination of fudge chocolate with tart lemon sherbet and you will never forget it.

You must visit the Rialto in Venice, Italy for two good reasons: the Rialto Bridge and the markets. It is often said that the Rialto has something for everybody, whether you are looking to admire the architectural beauty of the bridge or go grocery shopping for local produce. Gourmets, tourists, shoppers and locals frequent the Rialto area and it is a wonderful way to feel the pulse of the city.

Getting to the Rialto is easy and you can take the Vaporetto lines along the Grand Canal and then cross the Rialto Bridge to reach the markets. The Rialto markets have been the lifeline of Venice ever since 1097, with people visiting them for their daily fish, fruits, vegetables and other produce.

A visit to the Rialto markets is the best way to really understand this fascinating and romantic city. You will be able to spot fresh farm products being unloaded from the barges, food shoppers examining fish for freshness and quality, handcarts packed with vegetables and fruits being pushed around and many more fascinating market sights on your trip there.

I recommend an early morning visit to the Rialto markets. I found my before-breakfast visit quite rewarding because there was hardly any crowd around which allowed me to see the market at its best. The restaurant chefs and the stall owners were the only people around and the fruits, vegetables and fish stocked there were absolutely fresh. In addition to this, some of the stall owners had their music on and were singing along to Opera and Italian songs.

The Rialto market is the very heart of Venice and a walk along the Rialto Bridge in the early morning will grant you some fantastic views of the area. The crowds start pouring in after breakfast and then you can really view Venice at its busiest. The area is also home to San Giacomo, one of the most ancient of Venetian churches dating back to the eleventh century.

I purchased some great fruit for a picnic I was planning and enjoyed an espresso in a coffee shop before leaving the market.

1. Finnegan's - The only pub, out of over 100, in Rome that is actually owned by an Irish family. Finnegan's is extremely popular with the ex pat community for the beer and the best place to watch Sky Sports. As well as showing the football, the pub also shows rugby, Formula 1 and American Football.

2. Druid's Pub - Druid's Den and Druid's Rock are two of the best Irish pubs in Rome due to the excellent food, good craic, fine Guinness and traditional Irish music nights. Every Monday evening, the pubs play host to local bands singing traditional Irish songs.

Rome is one of the best destinations in Europe on account of its incredible architecture, historic atmosphere and romantic culture. This Italian city has been the setting for many a movie and the destination for several honeymoons; it is also just a great place to visit for those who want to relax and unwind with their loved ones. There is no bad time to visit Rome as the city always has something to offer and for this reason Rome has always been on my top ten places to visit in Europe.

I visited Rome in autumn last year and was so thrilled with the great weather and exciting events that I plan to revisit Rome this autumn. Although Rome draws hundreds of tourists in autumn, the crowds are not as large as they are during summer and spring. Rome in September and October is bright and sunny, giving tourists the opportunity to walk along its paved streets and feel the city’s pulse.

Rome is also a great place to visit in autumn if you love theatre, dance, music and other cultural activities. The highlight of Rome in autumn is the Roma Europa Festival, which will be held from September 21st to December 2nd this year. This annual event illustrates the best of Roman culture and you can enjoy several theatrical and musical performances. If you visit Rome during this time, as I plan to do, you can enjoy the performances of “The Irrepressibles,” a British team of rock musicians and “Delusion,” a multimedia performance of puppetry, visuals and violin by Laurie Anderson. This is just the tip of the iceberg of cultural splendour that Rome presents in autumn.

If you love theatre, you should not miss the International Festival of Urban Theatre, an annual theatrical event, which includes a lot of amusing activities for kids too. Another great thing about Rome between September 3rd and October 29th is that the Vatican Museum are thrown open at night. You are sure to enjoy a sightseeing trip at the Vatican Museum even if you are not a religious person.

My weekend in Rome, Italy

Despite my busy schedule, I decided to get away to Rome for a weekend and get the most out of it. Now Rome is a huge city and one cannot do full justice to it in one weekend, but I believed that, with the right planning, I would experience most of what Rome has to offer.

I arrived in Rome on Friday, having taken care to book the room well in advance since hotels in Rome tend to be crowded. I also needed to get a good night’s sleep in preparation for the tough itinerary ahead.

Next day, I started my weekend on a religious note at the Vatican, which is actually a tiny city in its own rights. Since I reached the Vatican early, I was able to miss the long queues and view the Vatican Museums, the Sistine Chapel, St. Peter’s Cathedral and Castle Sant-Angelo in peace.

By then it was time for lunch and I am glad I was sensible enough to have a light lunch or else I might have wasted the rest of my day sleeping. Post lunch, I got a taste of Roman history at the Coliseum, a huge amphitheatre, the Roman Forum, the ancient center of the city, and the Palatine Hill. I was told that the best place to spend the evenings and enjoy night life is the Trastevere and that’s where I went next before calling it a day.

I started the second day of my weekend throwing coins into the legendary Trevi Fountain and wishing for a longer vacation in Rome, after which I visited the Spanish Steps, admired the shops of Via Condotti and the stupendous Piazza de Popolo. I spent the afternoon wandering around Villa Borghese, enjoyed the sight of Rome at sunset from the Pincio and had a sumptuous Roman dinner before leaving.

Summer in the City in Rome

Rome rings to the sound of music during summer, when most of its main musical events take place. Although some concerts are staged indoors, many are held outside, making the most of those long, languid Roman nights.

The baths at the front of Hadrian’s Villa make a dramatic setting for The International Festival of Hadrian’s Wall (until July 18th) which features international acts as diverse as the Cloud Gate Dance Theatre of Taiwan (June 22 and 23) and Elvis Costello, who will close the festival.
Another festival with a stunning setting is Cosmophonies (until July 28th) at the Roman Theatre of Ostia Antica. Acts here will run the full spectrum, from the disco icons The Village People (July 20th) to the punk rock poet Patti Smith and a narrated piece on Chopin accompanied by his sublime piano music (July 28th).

All throughout July, Rock in Roma presents big names in the world of contemporary music at the Ippodromo delle Capannelle, kicking off with The Cranberries on July 5th and finishing with Jamaican singer Shaggy on July 30th

Architect Renzo Piano’s stunning Parco della Musica will host Luglio Suona Bene (July Sounds Good) from June 26th to end-July. This year’s programme is fantastic, with concerts from Tricky, one of the pioneers of trip-hop, the perennial Buena Vista Social Club (whom are always guaranteed a warm welcome in Italy) and Norah Jones, to name a few.

Classical music fans are not left out either. Musical Festival of the Nations will take place in two superb, open-air settings: the Teatro de Marcello archaeological park and the garden of the Villa Torlonia. The festival, which runs until early October, focuses on recital and chamber music. Rome’s Opera House will launch its summer season on July 5th, and features three productions: Romeo and Juliette, Aida and Rigoletto. Visiting the Vatican in Rome

Whatever sort of pilgrimage you are on in Rome, visiting the Vatican is undoubtedly one the highlights of the trip.

The Vatican really is a ‘city within a city’. At 0.44 square kilometres, it is the smallest state in the world, and although it famously has its own postage stamp, its currency is the euro and you passport can be left back at your hotel room or holiday apartment.

The focal point of the Vatican of course is the mammoth St. Peter’s Basilica and St. Peter’s square, an awe-inspiring oval shaped space designed by Bernini. History tells us that Saint Peter as executed here in 64AD, and in the 2nd century a sanctuary was erected in his honour. In the mid-4th century the Emperor Constantine built a basilica, though what you see today is the dates from the 15th and 15th centuries; a vast structure containing 11 chapels, 45 alters and two lateral naves under a majestic, landmark dome designed by Michelangelo.

As amazing as the basilica is, the crowing moment for many is a visit the eleven Vatican Museums that hold one of the most of important art collections in the world. Housed in a series of Renaissance Palaces, they hold a vast array of dazzling treasures that can often lead overload (it’s best to take a break after viewing each one). Works include luminous frescoes by Fra Angelico, Greek and Roman Statuary, Etruscan artefacts, ceramics by Picasso and paintings by DaVinci, Caravaggio and Giotto.

A visit to the museums ends at the Sistine Chapel, Michelangelo’s most famous work and possibly the most recognised piece of religious art in the world. Over 300 figures relate the story of Creation in this exquisitely- executed fresco, a work that reaches divinity in the fragment where God stretches out his hand to Adam.

Trastevere: West of the Tiber in Rome

When most visitors come to Rome, they prefer to stay in the city centre, close to major sites such as the Piazza Narvona and the Pantheon. Whilst this logical, a lot of people overlook a neighbourhood that is close to central Rome and can offer a much more local experience; Trastevere.

Its name comes from the Latin Trans Tiberim, meaning ‘beyond the Tiber’ and in many other ways this lovely, picturesque neighbourhood feels separate from the rest of the eternal city. Sure, by day its narrow, cobble-stoned streets receive a fair amount of tourists, but by evening most have headed back to their accommodation in the centre, leaving Trastevere’s dozens of charming bars and restaurants to the locals and particularly its large student population (there are many universities in the immediate area).

Trastevere has had an interesting history; in very early times it was populated with sailors and mariners who worked on the Tiber, but the area didn’t really become part of the city until the emperor Augustus included it in his zoning of Rome into 14 regions. The Great Race: the Mille Miglia

The Mille Miglia (thousand miles) celebrates this tradition by selecting the most beautiful vintage cars in the world to participate in an endurance rally around the country. The 2010 edition (May 5-9) departs from Brescia and journeys through Bologna, Urbino, San Marino and Rome (with a stopover at Castel Sant'Angelo) and then back to Brescia via Viterbo, Siena and Florence.

This history of the rally goes back to the 1920s when Brescia was furious at losing Italian Gran Prix to Monza. It soon became very popular, attracting drivers from all over Europe and forging the reputation of ‘grand touring’ cars such as Alf Romeo and Maserati (it generally ended in a stand off between an Italian-made car and a Mercedes). The race was banned in 1957 when a Spanish driver, his co-driver and many spectators were tragically killed in a crash.

In 1987 the Mille Miglia was revived and downgraded to a road rally as opposed to a race. Vintage cars from all over the world participate, and guidelines are strict. Their year of manufacture, for example, must be between 1927 and 1957 (the period of the original Mille Miglia) and are personally selected by the organisers as sterling examples of classic racing cars, ensuring the Mille Miglia is equalling as enthralling for spectators as it is for participants. No wonder it has been called ‘The Most Beautiful Race in the World.’

The Holiest of Stairs

The Scala Santa, or Holy Stairs, is one of Rome’s most revered sites. It is allegedly the place where Christ stood during his trial by Pontius Pilate before his Passion (Catholic belief dictates that the stairs were transported from Jerusalem to Rome by Saint Helena in the 4th century). Thousands of people visit them every day, and some climb them on their knees, an act that can lead to ‘plenary indulgence’ or the wavering of penance for sins.

In late 2009, the restoration of the Santo Silvestro chapel, one of the two that adjoin the stairway, was completed. The work was made possible with a donation from the John Paul Getty Foundation, took over seven years and involved over 40 experts and technicians. The original ceiling was painted by Flemish master Paul Bril with assistance from Giovanni Guerra, who also worked on the Saint Peter’s.

The restoration has been nothing short of miraculous, with many details and vivid colours revealed after centuries of dust, grime and damage.

These beautiful paintings consist of three large landscapes surrounded by gilded frames, with many details of the medieval everyday such as fishermen and hooded monks. Frecciarossa - Italy’s high-speed trains

Anyone who has taken a train into central Rome from say Venice, Florence or Milan probably hasn’t helped noticing the rather bleak scene around Roma Tiburtina, the stop before Termini station, Rome’s stazione centrale.

But this has changed quite recently with the opening a new stylish underground square named Piazza Ipogea, which, like the underground piazza at Termini, connects the adjacent roads, metro and overground train networks and provides passengers with shops, restaurants and other facilities. In the near future Tiburtina will become the terminus for Italy’s new high-speed train network, and the Piazza Ipogea is the first of many improvements to come.

Italy’s high-speed trains, called Frecciarossa (or ‘Red Arrows’) have been in service for some time, but only recently have they been extended to the entire network and link ups across borders with other high-speed networks are also planned. Whilst the creaky, old ‘inter-city’ trains do retain a certain charm, they are often chronically late, especially on the Milan-Rome route. The Frecciarossas and the new station at Tiburtina will hopefully pull Italy’s antiquated train system into the 21st century.

March 21st 2010 - is the date for our diary this year and although this is the main race day, the event as a whole runs from the 18th with stalls, other mini events and live concerts on during the build up to the running. If you live in Rome you already be aware of the prominence of the local Derby between AS Roma and Lazio for what is called calcio in Roma and football around Europe (soccer for Americans).

This year for 2009, 6th November is the day to be in Rome (or not to be if you are not a football fan) and if you can get tickets then this is one of the most competitive games in the Italian Seria A calendar. Other games perhaps of the same level in terms of competitiveness are:

I have been busy with business and friends visiting me in Rome, Italy lately and for that reason I have been easting out a lot lately. This has resulted in the discovery of some excellent restaurants that I had not got around to trying before.

San Lorenzo - The area of San Lorenzo is one of my favourites because of its vibrancy. 'Il Pommidoro' on Piazza dei Sanniti was excellent and served quality food at affordable prices. Quite a classy place, do not be put off by the pink table cloths!

Piazza Novana - 'Tre Scalini' was the restaurant I tried and took friends to and everyone ended the night quite impressed. The food is not necessarily cheap but this is Italian food at its best and this place is great for a special occasion.

Pantheon area - 'Terra Di Siena' on Piazza Pasquino was another restaurant which offered excellent food. Real Italian cooking, good service and nice venue.

It is that time of year again and the start of the football season is almost here. Here in Rome we call it Calcio and there is a lot of excitement about the start of the 2009-2010 season - as season which will culminate in the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.

In Rome A.S. Roma and Lazio are the 2 main Rome football teams although both teams do not usually play in the city on the day, due to the rivalry between the two teams.

There are a number of excellent guide books out there for most major cities these days and Rome Italy is no exception. I have been checking out the various choices and my Top 3 Rome travel guides are as below:

1. Rome Lonely Planet travel guide - in my opinion is about as good as it gets. This guide is compact and thus easily fits in a handbag or small backpack and it is jammed with up-to-date and spot on information. This is my favourite.

2. Rome Top 10 Eyewitness Guide - if you go to any city worldwide then try and get the Eyewitness Top 10 guide. this book literally fits into your trouser pockets (if you wear jeans) and is a quick fire look at the top 10 of everything in a city. This guide pays for itself with the handy tips and information it holds.

3. Time Out Rome - is set out quite a bit differently from the two guides above but is a close alternative if you are not a Lonely Planet or Eyewitness series fan.

AltaRoma in Rome

AltaRoma is a biennial event that is held in January and July. The locations of this festival are the Auditorium Parco della Musica and in Piazza di Pietra. The aim of AltaRoma is to combine elements of traditional fashion shows with eccentric events and experimental performances. Clothing, art and spectacle are being combined. The aim is not only to provide opportunities but also to encourage the growth of the fashion sector, to be a driving force of innovation and creativity.

AltaRoma was founded in 1998 by Agenzia per la moda spa, which was created by the Rome Chamber of Commerce and the Muncipality of rome, to promote the city of Rome on the Italian High Fashion Circuit.

There are several brand designers showing their creations to the public in great fashions houses. Besides that, there are photo expositions and discussions about fashion. AltaRoma has one competition too, which is called “Who is on next?”. This is organized in cooperation with the Italian Vogue. With this competition, they hope to find and discover new models. Some academics are participating such as Ecole de la Chambre Syndicale de la Couture Parisienne from France, Flanders Fashion Institute and Royal Accademy of Fine Arts from Belgium and the Accademia di Costume e di Moda from Rome.

This year the second event of AltaRoma will be held on the 12th of July until the 16th of July.

Coming to Roma cinema festival 2009

This year is the 4th edition of the Festival Internazionale del Film di Roma. The festival will be held in Rome from the 15th of October and will lasts for 8 days untill the 23rd of October. The previous 3 editions were very popular and that is why the have decided to organize this festival again.

The fourth edition of this festival is put on by the Fondazione Cinema per Roma and is promoted by the Fondazione Musica Per Roma, the Municipality of Rome, the Province of Rome and the Rome Chamber of Commerce.

During this festival, a lot of international films are shown such as ‘Pride and Glory’ with Colin Farell and Edward Norton and ‘The Duchess’ with Keira Knightly and Ralph Viennes. Besides that there are concerts, exhibitions and a lot of celebs. Last year, the festival began with the distinction of one of the greatest actors of all time Al Pacino.

This Roma cinema festival will be held in the Auditorium Parco Della Musica which is designed by Renzo Piano. Many conferences, exhibitions and events are held in this place. For Festival Internazionale del Film di Roma, 5 theatres are reserved for the showcases; The Sala Santa Cecilia, The sala Sinopoli, The Sala Petrassi, The Teatro Studio and Studio 3.

They are all outstanding locations for film festival exhibitions. The access to the theatres is changed in a Red Carpet. During this festival, there are a lot of areas where you can buy food, including bars, refreshment points, pizzerias and stand for sponsors.

The Golden Gala of Athletics in Rome 2009

On the 10th of July, the Golden Gala of Athletics 2009 takes place. This event will be held in the Olympic Stadium of Rome. The convention of athletics from the highest level join this three hour during Golden Gala. The Golden Gala of Athletics is voted ‘the best meeting on the planet’ in 2005.

The Golden Gala started in 1998 and is a height of the Golden League. The best athletics of the world come to this convention. In 1998 the IAAF, the International Association of Athletics Federation, brought the seven most prestigious meetings in Europe together and called it the IAAF Golden League.

The only thing that the Athletics have to do is win their own competition in all the categories and receive the jackpot of 1 million dollar. The categories of the competitions are 100 meter, 100 meter hurdles, 400 meter, 3000 meter, 5000 meter and javelin throw.

Celebrating the Eternal City

Rome is found by Romulus in 753 before Christ and known as the ‘Eternal City’. For the birth of the Eternal City, the Romans celebrate this date annually. The annual event is organized by Gruppo Storico Romano and will be held on the 21st of April and includes events throughout Rome.

Romans today celebrate it by lightning many candles all over the Aventine Hill and there is a spectacular firework above the Tiber. Besides that there are public speeches, gladiator shows, traditional Roman banquets and parades. Everybody is enjoying friends, family and children and everybody is dressed as Caesar, Augusto, Seneca and many other big characters. There is also a dance group that will entertain and show the public different types of dancing such as Il gioco, I veli, Nell’arena and Augurale.

During this day, archaeological sites and museums are also open and the entrance is for free. To see ancient Rome there is the Capitoline Museum. It is located on the Capitoline Hill, next to the Roman Forums. The Aventine Hill is the main site that is used for this event and to have a good view over the fireworks, the Campidoglio and Giardino degli Aranci are the best places. Small local societies and clubs which are specialized in the history of Rome, stage their own events and celebrations.

The party lasts all day into the evening and this celebration day has no entrance price.

Marathon in Rome - Maratona della cittá di Roma

The “Maratona della cittá di Roma”, what means Marathon of Rome takes place on the 22nd of March. It is an annual event and this year is the 15th edition. The track is 42,2 kilometers long and the start and finish are both in the centre of Rome near the Coliseum.

The route goes over the Saint Peter’s Square in Vatican, the Tiber, the Piazza del Populo, along the Spanish Steps and the Trevi Fountain. These are some of the highlights that can be seen during this marathon.

People who wants to participate, can register on the website of Maratona di Roma. The register fees are ranking from 32 to 60 euro. All the athletes that will complete the race will receive an official medal. The minimum age for participating this marathon is 18 years.

After the main marathon there is a Stracittadina Fun Run. 45.000 children, adults and seniors enjoy this Fun Run. It is a non-competitive run that is 4 kilometers and it starts at the Coliseum and the finish is nearby the ruins of emperor Nero’s Golden House.

New Year in Rome

New Year in Rome or "La Festa di San Silvestro" is a fabulous way to experience this city. Rome offers wide-ranging restaurants to a variety of religious and cultural activities to celebrate the New Year. In the past, the Romans celebrated New Year by eating traditional food like fish and pasta. Over the years this has changed and now Rome has exploded to be an exciting way to see in the New Year including dancing, eating, drinking and party hard with friends and family. Rome is lit up by fireworks with hundreds of people in the streets celebrating with each other.

The main piazza where people head to is Piazza del Popolo where there's fireworks and live music well into the night. On New Year's day, children are entertained in the square by performers and acrobats.

Recently the celebrations are also being held at the piazza in front of the Quirinale off Via Nazionale where you can see concerts playing Classical music followed by fireworks. If you're lucky, you might see the Italian President and other important members of the Italian government attend to this event. The main event the next day is the New Year Parade procession. Thousands of people wait anxiously to receive the Pope's blessings in Rome. The parade passes through the historic Castel Sant' Angelo then down Via della Conciliazione and ends in St. Peter's Square.

It's not hard to eat well in Rome and in fact it's almost criminal not to. People generally accept that falling into the trap of paying for over priced mediocre restaurants is part of traveling but in Italy, this can't be the experience.

There are also so many guide books around to ensure that you're not sent to the wrong restaurant by some inscrupulous tout but as you're welcomed by the wonderful aromas filling the air, it's pretty easy to let your nose lead you instead.

The fantastic smells that float around between the hours of 12:30 and 3pm and from around 8pm to around 11pm indicate the hours for lunch and dinner in Rome. Rather than walk around hopefully trying to find that true local gem, this small guide will help you achieve the best eating experience of your life, and at very reasonable prices.

River walks: The Tiber isn't quite as romantic as it used to be when Audrey Hepburn and Gregory Peck partied on a boat. One of the most romatic bridges is Ponte Sisto, a charming footbridge leading to Trastevere.

Restaurants: You can't eat better than in Rome and there are many beautiful trattories located down small lanes that have seating outside. One of the best areas for food is Trastevere where is seems that each corner has a more beautiful setting.

Roseto - Rose garden: For an unusual and headily-romantic evening take your beloved to the Roseto which is on Viale del Circo Massimo, on the slopes of the Aventine. This is Rome's public rose garden and is a wonderful place to take a piknic in the evenings where you can eat, drink and stroll through the roses whilst enjoying views over the ruined Palatine. Romantic Rome (Part 1)

Whether you're planning to propose to your loved one or just want to express your undying love to your partner, Rome is certainly one of the most romantic places to visit. Rome has wonderful beautiful streets, restaurants and parks to visit and if you find the crowds are cramping your style, try escaping the crowds and go off one of the many lanes that lead off from many of the famous piazzas suchs Campo der Fiori and Piazza Navona. There are plenty of pretty corners where you can escape the worst of the crowds. Taking a trip arm-in-arm is a romantic experience in itself and you'll also end up sampling some of what real Rome has to offer.

The bella vista di Roma: There are many hills in Rome all offering great panaramic views over Rome. One of the most romatic is near to the Spanish Steps and the Pincio (above Piazza del Popolo). Even though the walk is along a road, it's a quiet where there are stretches of wall where you can take a seat enjoy the view. At the top there's a terrace-restaurant where you can enjoy a drink or a meal.

The Aventine hill is a quirky and different district which has two parks with excellent views towards St Peter's, benches, orange trees etc. Better yet, try the Gianicolo hill which is just behind Trastevere and the Vatican. This is one of the best locations in Rome for a breathtaking view of the innumerable domes and bell towers.

Flowers say it all - Flowers (fiori) are blooming on every roof terrace and park. Single roses are sold on the street but they don't last for long. If you want something better for your loved one, try the flower market held at Campo dei Fiori from Monday to Friday.

New International film festival in Rome

One example of variety of activities and life a city can have is the launch of a completely new festival that should help it growing in importance, beauty and interest. Today I red about a new film festival in Italy. It aroused my interest as I am planning to go there on holidays. Here some facts for all that are interested in going to Rome this year and would like to enjoy some special events:

The “Cinema Festa Internazionale di Roma” is planned to run this year for the first time. As I could find out it takes place from 13th-21st October. During this week, about 80 films will be shown, which are coming from five different categories. And a prize of €200.000 is giving it a competitive character. A panel of 50 judges will price the best film, best actor and best actress.

The five main sections will be “Première” (Seven glamorous evenings of world premieres, complete with stars and directors.), “Il lavoro dell’attore” (The Actor’s Craft) (An exploration and celebration of acting, through laboratories, films and workshops. It exists the rumor that Robert De Niro will be involved in this event, and if it is true, he will probably will appear here J.), “Competition” (The jury, selected from the general public, under the guiding hand of an as-yet-unnamed figure from the film world, will be judging 14 international films.),

“Extra” (Featuring experimental films, television, documentaries and computer games.) and “Alice nella città” (Alice in the City) (This is a so called 'festival within a festival', aimed at the younger crowd: children and teenagers.)

For all kinds of interest is something there and I will try to see as much as possible.

But not only the content of this festival is worth to visit it, as Rome is one the cities considered as a capital of culture! So there is no need to create any stages or required locations. Rome provides plenty of cultural and historical places where the spectacle can take place, for example “The Auditorium” (“Auditorium Parco della Musica; a huge modern complex designed by Renzo Piano and opened in December 2002.), “Casa del Cinema“, “Casa del Jazz”, “Casa delle Letterature” (supposed to be one of the three Case to announce its plans at the official launch of the festival.).

Michelangelo and Rome

Ah Rome, such great memories I have from that miraculous city. Before coming there I was never much into art, but this city made me appreciate it and start admiring it. For the first time, and now for the rest of my life I have been enriched to enjoy the art that our world as to offer, everywhere I go.

Nearly everyone will probably think of one of world’s greatest creators of art, Michelangelo. What he did in one lifetime seems impossible. With the exceptional combination of being both a sculptor as well as a painter, he has devoted his lifework to the churches and basilicas of Rome.

Many would probably consider The fresco of The Last Judgement his greatest work, and although I loved the painting, I was absolutely blown away when I saw the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel.

The patience, dedication, simply the absolute brilliance of the decoration is amazing. I instantly became a fan of his work. It impossible not to admire what Michelangelo has done. They say that art needs to be understood, you can read in different ways and therefore people do not understand the art or can’t appreciate enough, but this work of art will be admired and loved by everyone.

Millions of visitors come each to the chapel in order to admire his work, and now I fully understand why.His vision was exceptional. He spoke of art when seeing a sculpture, that is was already there and that each stone was different. The final statue was something he could see exactly in detail in his mind already, when just seeing an untouched sculpture. I was just a matter of chipping away the pieces that hidden the true shape of the statue. To me, those are words of a true artistic genius. Rome Events Alert: In September the annual Festival Internazionale del Teatro Urbano invades streets all over Rome, aiming to transform urban spaces into theatre spaces and the pedestrian into the extraordinary. The first day - the "off" festival - is dedicated to young performers and alternative theatre.

The agenda of the festival organisers is to reclaim the theatre and combat indifference with surprise "guerilla tactics". The surroundings of Florence are put into second place due to Florence’s art and culture, but if you're in the city for more than a couple of days, you might want to spend some time outside. Luckily, Florence is surrounded by Tuscany, an attractive scenery, medieval villages, soft hills, monasteries, churches, cosy ristorantes, shaded forests, green hills and vineyards. The Province of Florence has a vast and varied territory, rich in gently rolling hills and mountains, streams and valleys.

One of the most famous attractions is Sienna with its well-conserved medieval streets and piazzas where the annual festival of the Palio, a dramatic horserace takes place, the Campo. This is the secular heart of Siena, a sloping amphitheatre of a square, surrounded by cafe tables, crowds of tourists and locals. Walking uphill, you arrive at the monumental green-and-white-striped Duomo, the city’s cathedral.

In the beginning of its history, Siena was a Roman colony and the town kept its pride from the past, including many statues and reminders of Romulus, Remus and the legendary she-wolf. Later, Siena became a prosperous and important medieval town, even a rival to Florence, but the Black Death in combination with the decline of the banking business changed its fortune.
Maybe due to the economic and cultural stagnancy, maybe due to the consistent efforts to maintain the internal customs, Siena has kept alive its unusual and renowned traditions. There is a reason why "Siena opens up its heart more than any other place," as the famous inscription reads on the Porta di Camollia.

There’s no real proof that ice cream was actually made in Italy although both Florence and Sicily have been staking claims since the 16th century. Rumours have it that 3000 years ago, the chinese liked to flavour snow with fruit but whereever the truth lies, one fact still remains; ice cream always tastes better in the Eternal City.

Rome’s Gelateria Giolitti (via Uffici del Vicario 40) is one of the best in the city and has long been a haunt for artists and politicians. The chocolate and nougat Coppia Olimpica, shaped like an Olympic torch that’s filled with zabaione (eggs and Marsala fortified wine) and the coffee based Coppa Mondiale (in the colours of the Italian flag) are two of the specialities.

Il Palazzo del Freddo (via Principe Eugenio 65) is the oldest and largest ice-cream parlour in Italy. Their specialities are Caterinetta which is an unusual chilled cream cake named after the French Catherinettes who were independent, unmarried woman of the 1900’s and Sampietrino, a delicious choc-ice textured like the old Roman cobbled roads.

If you really want a treat, head to Il Gelato di San Crispino (via della Panetteria 42) who make the wonderful zabaglione ice cream which is prepared with a 20 year old liqueur or the delicate Armagnac cream, made with a prized 1985 Laberdolive.

At Rome’s largest open-air flea market which is held every Sunday morning Trastevere off Piazza Ippolito Nievo, there are hundreds of sellers from Trastevere and the surrounding Castelli Romani selling everything from shoes to sheets to fruits and vegetables along at least a mile long strip. During the Second World War, this was the city’s black market and until now you can feel a hint of illegality.

It's best to arrive early so you can snag the best merchandise and avoid the crowds. As on every flea market you have to bargain! The price they’ll offer you is much to high and even they don’t expect you to pay it. However, if you've ever been impressed with the bargaining power of Spanish people, you haven't seen the Italian doing it. So try to bargain hard and get some good deals. And, as at any other street market, beware of pickpockets.

Estate Romana Festival in Rome

The Estate Romana Festival in Rome starts in June and lasts until September. The varied program at the Estate Romana Festival offers jazz, rock, classical music, film, sport, theatre and children's fun to fill Rome's evenings. Events take place in parks, courtyards, art galleries and around monuments throughout the city, with giant screens erected to show popular films at late-night viewings.

The programme combines a colourful mix of entertainment from around the world. Open-air film screens are set up in Vittorio Emmanuele Square, on the River Tiber Island and on the top of Gianicolo Hill in Trastevere.

There is also a Cabaret Festival held on the Oppio Hill, next-door to the Colisseum. For a little impression of what is happening during the Estate Romana Festival.

Tivoli - Outside of Rome

An unknown treasure in Italy, only 30 km from Rome, is Tivoli, the former Tibur, which was already used by Romans in recent times as holiday resort and now reminds us of Italy’s great past and antiquity. Tivoli is located at the falls of the Aniene river, where it issues from the Sabine hills, from where you will enjoy a spectacular view over the Roman Campagna.

Nowadays it’s famous for its magnificent villas, like Adrian Villa with the reproduction of the Athens Academia and the city of Canopus. Another one is Villa d’ Este where there are 2 different parts of the garden which are joined by 3 big fish ponds the Fountain of Neptune. Numerous paths divide the part on the slopes of the hills, as well as charming fountains.

The most beautiful ones are Fountains of the Dragon, Fountains of Proserpine, the Fountain of Tivoli, the Hundred Fountains and the Fontana del Bicchierone, to which even Bernini contributed. The second part is distinguished by mock-grottoes with themes of fantasy.

When you are in Rome and have enough time take the metro Line B to Ponte Mammolo, then the blue COTRAL bus to Tivoli. To see both villas you should start with Villa d'Este, then take the local orange bus. At the end of the day you can either take an orange bus back to Ponte Mammolo metro station in Rome, or you walk a little bit farther to the main road (Via Tiburtina) where the blue COTRAL bus runs more frequently.

It is that time of year again and I cannot wait because the PhotoShow takes place next week! I love taking photos and my digital camera is one of the first things I always pack before going on any trip, no matter where I am travelling to.

This show is a great exhibition and is one that takes place at the Nuova Fiera di Roma between the 5th and 7th of April and at only €8 you will have access to more than 250 exhibitors. The exhibitors in past shows have included people covering all areas to do with Digital PhotoGraphy

After the huge tennis tournaments in London and Paris, great tennis returns to Rome with the Masters Series at the Foro Italico. The world's best tennis players compete for the titles won by Rafael Nadal and Jelena Jankovic in 2007. The men compete from 3-11 May, and the women from 10-18 May.

Aside from the Grand Slams, the ATP Masters Series is the highest-ranking tennis competition in the world. Its tournaments attract the cream of the sport's elite as they vie for the coveted title of world number one.

If you are anything like me, then you will love going to different sports events around the world. When I went to the United States, I went to a baseball game and American Football game. In Finland I went to a rally driving event and an ice-hockey game.

In Rome the two big sports are football (calcio) and basketball. For football you have a choice of two teams and they are Lazio and AS Roma. If you get the chance it can be worth going to see a game. Alitalia next week will be announcing who their preferred buyer will be and it could be either Air France or Air One. The Italian government still owns a 49.9 % part of Alitalia. The decision originally was meant to occur before January and the delay for the decision until is very very godo for Christmas fliers because it was thought that any decision which did not appeas Alitalia unions, might have potentially created Xmas strikes.

Rome Bars Guide, - Gilda Bar

Knowing where to find a good bar where you can also hear some good live music, is always worht knowing about. I am not sure about you, but I love unwinding with a beer and some music.

In Rome, Italy one bar I highly recommend is the Gilda Bar, 97 Via Mario de' Fiori in Rome. It is not the cheapest bar perhaps, at between fifteen and thirty euros, but you do get your money's worth here. Open normally from 11pm through to four in the morning, quite a few celebrities and high rollers frequent this bar. Gilda Bar is only three minutes walk from Piazza di Spagna and near to the main nightclub area.

If you are visiting Rome and spending a few nights in the Italian capital, and you want to get off the beaten track, it is worth spending a couple of days exploring Rome’s neighbour cities and villages.

The region around Rome, Lazio, has a lot to offer to all those tourists who love art, nature and good food and there are a lot of jewels waiting to be discovered. One of such jewels is the medieval city of Viterbo, in the area called ‘La Tuscia’, where the old civilisation of ‘Etruschi’ (older than the Romans) used to be based when the Romans took over.

Viterbo is a picturesque town on the hills, just 80 km north of Rome. It can be reached in about 2 hours by local trains, 1 and half hours by bus or just 1 hour by car. Viterbo used to be the summer residence of the popes, and it still boasts the lovely ‘Palazzo dei Papi’ (Palace of the Popes), with its characteristic Romanic arches, located in the heart of the Medieval centre of the city. The Medieval architecture of the city centre in Viterbo is perfectly preserved, together with its ancient walls. Trevi Fountain in Rome turns red

Tourists in Rome would have had a surprise on October 19th, when visiting the Trevi Fountain. The fountain water was red and this is thought to have to be the result of a stunt by an artist.

News reports say that the artists responsible was a gentleman by the name of Graziano Cecchini according to Italian police. Cecchini has not openly admitted to the stunt but neither does he make any effort to deny it according to press reports.

It is said that the Trevi Fountain itself is not really damaged which is good news, and the event did create excitement and interest for the hundreds of tourist who got to see this strange site.

The magnificent Palace of Exhibitions in Rome (Palazzo delle Esposizioni) has recently seen its five year restoration work completed and as a result, the Palace of Exhibitions is now back open again to the public.

There are some excellent exhibitions due to take place now with a Stanley Kubrick exhibit ongoign from October 6th through to 6th Januray 2008. The building itself looks classy with its £20 million face lift.

When you visit Rome on holiday or vacation, finding somewhere to stay can be expensive, especially when you have children or the mother-in-law also to pay for. I absolutely love Rome and I have been started looking for cheaper ways to stay as there are six of us in total.

After lots of research I have found that rather than staying in a hotel, Rome apartment rentals can be a cheaper and also more fun way to stay in Rome, Italy with the family. What I like more than anything is that it is easier to eat one or two meals in the apartment. I love Italian food and I love taking the family to a restaurant but if we did that 3 times a day for all meals, it becomes too costly. Staying in apartment rental in Rome, we can do breakfast in the apartment and then eat out later in the day.
